How Running Shoes Have Changed – Running for BOLD

Are you a casual jogger, a daily runner or hard-core marathon runner? Are you shopping for some new runners for either your daily jog or your upcoming marathon? Depending on how long you have been running or jogging, you may or may not be aware of just how different the style choices are today versus the running shoes of decades ago.

Who remembers when sneakers or running shoes came in pretty much only a couple of colors – white with blue stripes. We all know this iconic sneaker brand, Adidas. Their iconic 3-striped sneaker design was prevalent in the 1980’s even though it did not seem to match up with the colorful clothing of the period. I suppose having bright bold clothing and shoes may have been a bit too much.

If you are a runner or jogger from the 1980’s or just a child of the 1980’s, you may feel like you are experiencing a bit of a time warp or rebirth of some style trends from that era - well, at least in the shoe department – and most noticeably in the athletic shoe arena. Trending styles in clothing was lots of stretch knits in bold bright and often neon colors. Color blocking was also very popular. Remember, Cyndi Lauper and “Girls just want to have fun”. If you do, you will be immediately taken back to the gold old days of the 1980’s - neon bold brights, stretch tops, leggings, color blocking and leg warmers - and let’s not forget, the BIG hair.

Athletic shoe manufacturers like Nike, Adidas and Reebok today seem to be taking a nod from the 1980’s in their new running shoe designs and color choices. We are seeing bold bright and neon colored running shoes, done in various color blocked patterns. It is as if the 1980’s has taken over our athletic shoe collection – and also in many ways, our athletic clothing.

Even some lesser known brand name athletic shoe makers are getting in on the trend. Take the Newton Running Gravity III. This particular running shoe is done in a bright orange and yellow with highlights in a bright red…and this one is for you men out there. Come on guys, go ahead…show off those feet / shoes! For the women, you can choose the funky hot pink fuchsia runner with highlights in turquoise and bold yellow. If you want your feet to get noticed…here you go. But perhaps more importantly is how the runners make you feel, and not whether other friends or joggers notice your shoes. With a pair of colorful runners like these Newton Running Gravity’s, I cannot imagine not smiling as I lace them up before a run. Being a person who loves color, these running shoes could definitely be a motivating factor in getting me to get in that daily jog. You should give it a try. See how motivational colorful shoes can be. What have you got to lose?

From one of the true iconic sneaker or running shoe brands, Adidas, the Spring blade Drive 2 is just another example of form, function and funky all melding beautifully together to form a superb athletic running shoe. For women who want the best in athletic shoe technology along with wanting to make a definite styling statement, these runners are perfect. For those athletes who still want the best of sneaker tech but are feeling a little less flamboyant, these Adidas Springblade Drive 2’s also come in more subdued colors - although I am not sure there is anything truly subdued about these shoes at all.

And now for my personal favorite - I cannot stop talking about or drooling over the Onitsuka Tiger Serrano. And while not fully in the vein of the trendy 1980’s neon colors, the fact that there is a definite print on the shoes is another part of this athletic shoe trend. These super feminine pink and white stripe with a floral print on top is like a print you might find in home décor – a bed duvet cover, curtains, a throw pillow, etc. And from Adidas, there is the ZX 500 2.0 (not sure why the name so technical for such a pretty shoe). If you want an in between big and bold and a little bit different, these black floral sneakers may be for you. Both of the patterns on these athletic shoes are completely unexpected and eye catching – pretty much the same intent as with the bold bright neon colors of the other runners highlighted in this article.
